Experience

Hard Work with a Big Payback

This is a very difficult trail for experienced hikers outfitted with appropriate equipment.  The trail consists of may areas with steep and rugged conditions.  There will likely be snow on the trail until late in the season (July/August). The trail is 12.6 miles round trip from the parking lot or 10.4 miles from the trailhead that starts near the Sauk River bridge on the Monte Cristo trail.

That being said, those hikers prepared for a hard day of hiking will be rewarded with breath taking scenery and an exhilarating experience.  From the trail, Silvertip Peak and the South Fork Sauk River vally can be seen frequently after the first 2.5 wooded miles from the trailhead.  The trail turns rough and steep at approimately 3.6 miles and continues to be difficult until you reach Gothic Basin at 5030 ft. elevation beneath and southeast of Gothic Peak.

Gothic Basin has many areas to explore.  Plan to spend at least 4-5 hours in the area.  There are numerous camp sites in the area.  Packing in and staying the night is well worth the effort.
